The first of the middle colleges, LaGuardia in New York, opened its doors in the early 1970s. Since then numerous community college districts on the West Coast have developed collaborative relationships with high school districts to provide creative and challenging educational opportunities to young people. Grossmont College and Grossmont Union High School District began their first year of partnership in the fall of 2001 with the first class of juniors at GMCHS.
